At least 14 candidates of Gazipur Union in Haimchar upazila boycotted polls held yesterday in 12 unions. Of them, two are chairman candidates -- Ismail Gazi of BNP and Montu Peda, an Awami League rebel candidate. In complaints to the returning officer they said they have boycotted the polls due to massive irregularities in the polling centres and obstruction created to prevent voters from going to the poll centres by supports of AL candidates. Witness Abul Bashar and others said voters were intimidated on their way to polling centres. Only those supporters of AL candidates were seen at the polling centres. When contacted, returning officer Krishibid Jamal Hossain said he came to know that voting was going on peacefully in all polling centres.
