The curtain of the domestic football season 2015-16 finally will be raised today with KFC Independence Cup football tournament. BJMC and Rahmatganj will play the opening match a 4:30pm and Brothers Union will take on Uttar Baridhara in the second match in the opening day at 7pm.
The big teams will begin their season’s campaign from second day tomorrow with Dhaka Abahani Limited taking on Soccer Club and Mohammedan Sporting Club will face Muktijoddha in the day’s first and second match respectively.
Meanwhile, out of 12 teams of the Bangladesh Premier League, 11 are taking part in the KFC independence Cup. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club refrained from taking part in the tournament due to dispute with demanding some players, who played for them last season.
But all the teams are ready to play the tournament and also completed their all formalities of players’ registration including the foreign booters while the last date of signing up foreign players was March 31 (yesterday).
Besides Sheikh Jamal, who are not playing the Independence Cup, Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra are ahead of others in black and white in collection of quality foreign players while they signed up Fikru Teferra Lemessa, an Ethiopian Striker.
In fact the signing of Fikru is the only surprise among the all foreign booters of this season while the Ethiopian proved his mettle in the Indian Super League playing for the Atletico De Kolkata, former champions and the defending champions Chennai FC.
However, apart from Fikru, their other collections are Ikanga, Paul Emily, who have been playing here for last few seasons for different clubs and a Belgian also joined recently.
Chittagong Abahani, who are very much ambitious to win the league title and obviously eyeing to began the season with triumphing the Independence Cup, roped in Noel Fabrics of Haiti, Joel Omari of Holland, Abass Yunnesa and Tareque Al Janabi of Morocco. The Moroccans duo played or Russel earlier, but could not show any extra ordinary performance while the Haitian and the Dutch might be quality booters.
Dhaka Abahani Limited signed up Sunday, Lee Tuck, Samad Yusuf, Camara and an English player Rohan Rickett from Arsenal.
Brothers also signed up some familiar figures in Dhaka, Awdu Ibrahim, who played for Dhaka Abahani Limited for last seven years, Kingsley Nkocha, and Augustin Walson.
