The teachers’ representatives from 37 public universities will hold a meeting today to plan their next course of action regarding their demands over the Eighth National Pay Scale. The Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers’ Association (FBUTA) will hold the meeting at the Club Building of Dhaka University at 11 am. The federation will later hold a briefing. “Federation leaders have held several meetings with the four-member secretary committee regarding the fulfillment of our demands after a meeting with the Prime Minister. Following it, the general meeting of teachers decided to suspend the work abstention in the universities on March 12,” FBUTA secretary general Prof ASM Maksud Kamal said in a press release yesterday. “Later, a meeting of the Cabinet sub-committee was held with the participation of the teachers on March 24. Against this background, a general meeting of the FBUTA will be held tomorrow to discuss the next course of action about our demands,” he added. Public university teachers resorted to different programmes around 10 months ago to protest against “salary discrimination”. On Mar 24, the government announced that 25pc of public university professors will get Grade-1 status under certain conditions.
