At least 21 women and children have been raped in the country from the start of this month. Of them, four were killed after being raped. This has been stated in the monthly report of the Bangladesh Society for the Enforcement of Human Rights (BSEHR). On March 20, Sohagi Jahan Tonu, a second-year student of history at Comilla Victoria College, was killed after being raped. Her body was found in a bush beside a culvert in the Comilla Cantonment area at night on the same day. However, law enforcers are yet to make any headway in the case. BSEHR chairman Sigma Huda blamed social and moral degradation for the rise in rape incidents across the country. He also blamed blind imitation of foreign culture and misuse of information technology in this regard. Huda said the government and law enforcement agencies must take effective measures to deal with rapists, adding that human rights bodies should arrange awareness-building programmes.
