BNP for judicial probe to unearth Tonu murder mystery

Voicing deep concern over the ‘alarming’ rise in rape incidents in the country, BNP yesterday called on the government to form judicial probe team to debunk the mystery behind the murder of Sohagi Jahan Tonu, a student of Comilla Victoria College, reports UNB. “The government should immediately constitute an investigation committee headed by a retired justice to unveil the fact (behind the Tonu murder),” said BNP vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman. He came up with the demand while addressing a human chain programme arranged by Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal in front of the Jatiya Press Club demanding exemplary punishment of the killers of the college girl. Tonu, 19, a second year history student of Victoria College and a member of Victoria College Theatre, went missing on the evening of March 20, hours after she had got out of her home at Comilla Mynamati Cantonment for private tuition. Later, her body was recovered from the Cantonment area at night. Police suspected that she had been raped before the murder. The BNP leader urged the organisations raising their voices for ensuring justice for Tonu’s family to arrange a roundtable discussion to put pressure on the government at act. Without mentioning any reference or source, Noman said now five women are being killed after rape in the country every day on average. The BNP leader alleged that the government has failed on all fronts to the run the country. “There’s no rule of law now in the country.” He also called upon all to raise their voice against Tonu murder to ensure their self security. “Or else, your sister may also fall pray to terrorists.” Later, speaking at a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club, Noman threatened to wage a movement against the government if the proper trial of Tonu killing is not held. “The entire nation is now united against Tonu murder. BNP will wage a strong movement together with people if the government fails to hold a fair trial of the incident.” All Community Forum arranged the discussion on BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Vision 2030.
