A set piece tragedy deprived Bangladesh from a deserving win against Tajikistan when a late strike from forward Fakhullo helped the visitors make a 1-1 draw in the World Cup qualifying match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
The better side on the day went ahead on 50th minute through Emily and Fakhullo equalised the margin on 88th minute from a free kick.
Bangladesh, who have better command on the match right from the kick off, were ahead in the ball possessions and forced the visitors to concede a series of corners inside 10 minutes.
Jamal Bhuiyan’s low kick from the first corner created an opportunity but neither Emily nor Hemonta or Jewel could touch the ball from a close distance. In the next occasion Mamunl’s pin-pointed flank kicks were cleared by the tall defenders.
The first move with down the right side with a nice combination of Jewel Rana and Nasirul Islam made a great threat but a brave defensive effort of Tajikistan avoided the risks confidently.
The visitors, who enjoyed huge physical advantage, cleared most of the floating balls inside the area before turned into danger, as the hosts forwards were not tall enough to beat the opponents markers.
However, Bangladesh demonstrated an organised and disciplined game to squeeze the stronger opponents with a series of sharp attacks in the full first half but could not mark the target for once. On other hand Tajikistan could make only real chance on 21st minute with a move through the midway and this time Bangladesh defender Yasin successfully saved a close range attempt of Dzhalilov.
After the break Bangladesh made it afresh and continued their momentum of attacking approach with passing football to keep the full command. They also opened spaces breaking the defense line and went ahead on 50th minute through Emily, who made just produced the final touch.
This time, captain Mamunul, who is highly featured as a play-maker and also for his remarkable free-kick took one from 30 yards from post which went to goalkeeper Tuychiev after a gentle header of Hemonta Vincent. But the ball was slipped from Tuychiev’s hands and Emily who was left unmarked closer to the post, just tapped the ball into net (1-0).
But Emily was definitely responsible for his failure to score a goal on 69th when he was left free and have time to receive the ball after Hemento released a brilliant cross. Eventually Emily’s attempt went out just kissing the cross piece.
After losing the golden opportunity to take clear lead, Bangladesh went on defensive tactics despite having a ten-man opponents while a Tajik forward Asrov got marching order after seeing double yellow and fell into tremendous pressure. But still they managed to slam the equaliser on 88th minute. When it looked that Bangladesh would lave the field with full three points, the home side swallowed a surprising goal as Fatkhullo’s kick beat the wall and goalkeeper Rasel in the air before sailing into the net (1-1).
