EU envoy for quick act on
climate negotiations

Ambassador of the European Union (EU) Delegation to Bangladesh Pierre Mayaudon yesterday said the year 2015 is a decisive year for climate negotiations mentioning that the quick act together will ensure maximum benefit, reports UNB. “Serious risks are associated to climate change, a swift transition to a low carbon future offers numerous opportunities: the sooner we act together, the greater the benefit,” said the diplomat.  The EU envoy was speaking at a function marking the EU-Bangladesh Climate Diplomacy Day in Dhaka. He also said it is essential to secure a fair, ambitious and legally-binding a new international climate agreement. The Delegation of the European Union and member States celebrated the day and hosted a Multi-stakeholder Climate Dialogue to highlight the importance and benefits of enhancing climate action in all countries and reaching a new international climate deal in Paris later this year. The event was organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Forests and Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation. Secretary of Ministry of Environment and Forests Dr Kamal Uddin Ahmed was present as the chief guest at the event chaired by PKSF Chairman Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad. He highlighted the importance of the partnership of the EU Delegation and Member States with the government of Bangladesh, CSOs and other stakeholders for sustained mitigation and effective adaptation actions in Bangladesh. Professional Fellow, Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies M Asaduzzaman presented a CSO position paper on the international climate negotiations, while A Atiq Rahman presented preliminary research findings of Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies study on people’s expectations for Paris Conference.Giuseppe Berto (MD, EOS Textile Mills Ltd) and Nazrul Islam, MD, Infrastructure Investment Facilitation Company (IIFC) made presentations highlighting the role of energy efficiency in climate change mitigation.
