CHITTAGONG: Professor Dr Shirin Akhtar of Bengali Department of Chittagong University (CU) has been appointed as the first-ever female Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Pro-VC) of the university yesterday, reports BSS.
An Education Ministry fax-message reached here yesterday noon confirmed the appointment of Prof Dr Shirin Akhtar as the Pro-VC for a 4-year term from today, says Prof Dr Kamrul Huda, Registrar (acting) of CU.
The post fell vacant after the former Pro-VC Prof Dr Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury joined as the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of CU on June 15 last year. A senior teacher of Bengali Department Prof Dr Shirin Akhtar received her PhD from Jadavpur University in India in 1991.
Earlier, she completed Master of Arts (MA) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees in Bengali from CU and joined the university as a Lecturer in the same department in 1996.
Born in a respectable Muslim family at the city's Eidgaon area in 1956, Dr Shirin has to her credit as many as 14 research articles published home and abroad.
