The weather office in isolated Monpura island of Bhola district is yet to start functioning although construction of its building was completed about nine years ago. Sources said the three-storey office building was constructed in Char Faizuddin in 2006 by the government that felt it necessary for safety of about 500,000 people living in Monpura and Charfassion upazilas. Locals said the people of about 30 isolated shoals of char lands and thousands of fishermen who go fishing in the Bay of Bengal need to be updated on weather for safety. But after the completion of the building construction no measure was taken by the government to open the weather office for the sake of lakhs of people, who remain vulnerable to storm and tidal surge, especially during rainy season, they said. When contacted, Ershad Hossain Khan, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Monpura, said he has communicated with the authorities concerned and requested them to start operation of the weather office in the interest of char people and fishermen.
