Hefajat to protest �conspiracy against state religion�

Hefajat-e-Islam, Bangladesh yesterday announced to hold rallies across the country on Friday (Mar 25) protesting the writ petition against Islam’s ‘state religion’ status in the constitution, reports UNB. Hefajat-e-Islam secretary general Junaid Babunagri announced the programme at a press briefing at Chittagong Press Club. Junaid said the High Court is scheduled to hear on March 27 a writ petition challenging the legality of making Islam ‘state religion’ in the constitution. After the HC decision, he threatened, Hefajat will announce a tougher programme in consultation with top ulema and mashayekh. Junaid, said, “What’s the necessity of moving a 28-year-old writ on the state religion before the court where the country is undergoing so many problems? People will have to remain alert whether the government is trying to make any political gain from the ‘state religion’ issue.” “Earlier, several petitions had been filed against the state religion status of Islam in the constitution which were rejected by the courts concerned but now it’s not clear why the court accepted the writ for hearing,” he said.
