The Supreme Court yesterday extended by seven days its stay order against a High Court order that granted bail to BNP leader Mirza Abbas in a graft case filed by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) for irregularities in allocating plots, reports UNB.
A five member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha, passed the order following a petition filed by the ACC. ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan on Monday said the ACC appealed for the extension of the stay order because they have not yet received the copy of High Court order. Earlier on March 14, the bench stayed a High Court order for 7 days that granted bail to Mirza Abbas in the graft case after hearing a petition filed by the ACC, said, lawyer of the ACC.
On March 9, the HC granted bail to the BNP leader in the case. On February 8, the HC issued a rule to explain why Mirza Abbas would not be given permanent bail in the case.
Earlier on February 15, the BNP leader secured bail from the HC in two separate arson cases filed with Motijheel and Paltan police stations. On March 6, 2014, the ACC filed the graft case with Shahbagh Police Station against Mirza Abbas and several others on charge of corruption in plot allocation among journalists when he was the Housing and Public Works Minister. On January 6, 2015, a Dhaka court sent BNP leader Abbas to jail rejecting his bail petition in the two arson cases filed with Motijheel and Paltan police stations after he surrendered before the court.
