Experts for ribbon retting in rotting jute amid water scarcity

BSS

Experts at a training workshop have laid emphasis on adoption of the easiest ribbon retting technology for rotting jute plants amid water scarcity to get upgraded quality of the fibre with increased yield rate, reports BSS. They called upon the farmers for large-scale adoption of the latest and low-cost ribbon retting method for rotting and separation of the fibre from harvested jute plants to get maximum benefits. The experts made these observations at the training workshop on ‘Production of high yielding local variety Jute, jute seed and improved retting technology’ project held on Saturday at District Shilpakala Academy auditorium in the city.
The Directorate of Jute under the Ministry of Jute and Textiles in association with Sadar Upazila Jute Department and Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI) organised the workshop for 100 selected farmers to educate them on the latest technologies.
Sadar Upazila Chairman Nasima Zaman Boby attended the workshop as the chief guest with Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ziaur Rahman in the chair.
Principal Scientific Officer of BJRI at its Rangpur Regional Station Dr Abdul Fazal Mollah, Horticulture Specialist of the Department of Agriculture Extension Khondker Md Mesbahul Islam, Assistant Director of the Directorate of Jute for Rangpur Region Mossarraf Hossain, Sadar Upazila Jute Development Officer AKM Mahbub Alam Biswas conducted different sessions in the workshop.
The experts said multidimensional use of jute products has been increasing following adverse effects of synthetic fibre on environment throughout the world ushering a new hope for revival of past glory of the ‘golden’ fibre.
They discussed various traditional and low-cost retting ways, including ribbon retting in only nine days, of the fibre during droughts or water scarcity to improve quality and grade of ‘jute-kenaf-mesta fibre’ to ensure better market price.
The chief guest said demand for jute has been increasing fast both at home and abroad as the fibre is being used as construction materials for packaging purposes, earthquake surviving houses, geo-textiles for embankments and bodies of cars.
