One killed in pre-polls clash

Pabna: A man was killed and 12 others were injured in a clash between supporters of Awami League-backed and rebel candidates over the campaign for the upcoming union parishad (UP) election at Mirpur village in Dhalarchar union of Bera upazila onSaturday night, reports UNB. Jakir Hossain, assistant superintendent of police of Bera circle, said supporters of AL nominated Korban Ali, president of Dhalarchar union unit of AL, launched an attack on the men of rebel candidate Nasir Uddin Mandol, general secretary of the same unit, during campaign in the area at 11:30pm.
A chase and counter-chase took place during the melee.
At one stage, Korban’s supporters opened fire at the men of Nasir, leaving Goher Uddin,42, son of Pashan Uddin Mandol, a resident of Khayerbagan village, dead on the spot and 12 others injured. On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Additional police forces have been deployed in the area, the SP added.
Faridpur AL conference Mar 22
FARIDPUR: The triennial conference of Faridpur district Awami League will be held on Tuesday (March 22) at local Ambica Memorial ground, reports BSS.
Brisk preparations are afoot in the district town centering the ensuing district conference which was last held in 2005. The president of that committee Kazi Zainul Abedin, who is now administrator of Faridpur Zilla Parishad, is now sick and suffering from old age complications.
The secretary of that committee Hasibul Hassan Lavlu died in 2009. Since then the joint secretary is working as acting secretary.
This time the councillors will elect new office-bearers including the all important president and secretary. The whole district town is having a festive look with decorations by poster, festoons and gates.
Prisoner dies in Manikganj

A prisoner of Manikganj district jail died at the Sadar Adhunik Hospital early yesterday.
The deceased was Ali Hossain Chotu alias Tutul, 41, of
Joyra village in sadar upazila of the district.
Abu Musa, Jailer of the district jail, said the prisoner suddenly fell sick at 3.30 am yesterday. As his condition deteriorated, he was sent to Manikganj Sadar Hospital at about 4am.
Dr Krishan Sarker Dilip of the hospital said Tulul was admitted with severe chest pain at about 4am and died after some time. Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Police station Aminur Rahaman said Tutul was arrested with illegal Yaba tablets three month ago. He was sent to the jail through a court order.
Cow fattening drugs seized
 OUR CORRESPONDENT, Meherpur

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized 50,000 pieces of illegal smuggled cow fattening tablets on Buripota border in sadar upazila of Meherpur district on Saturday night.
According to Buripota BGB camp commander Nazrul Islam, on Saturday night, some smugglers crossed into the country with the tablets through fenced 116 demarcation pillar area.
As the smugglers saw the patrolling BDR men they fled the area leaving the drugs in 50 small containers behind.
The drugs are worth Tk 5 lakh.
