Terror strikes Turkey again

Terror strikes Turkey again

Two separate and deadly terror attacks have caused deaths, destruction and fear in Turkey. The latest attack in Istanbul, the second in less than a week, has recorded deaths of five people including one suicide bomber. The country has been on high alert after experiencing a string of deadly terrorist attacks on its soil. Terrifyingly, more than 200 people died there in five major suicide attacks since July 2015.
Though there wasn’t any immediate claim of responsibility, but it is assumed that an offshoot of Kurdistan workers’ party (PKK), which had carried attacks in Ankara last week, is responsible for the onslaught in Istanbul too. The bombings were reported to be retaliations against the Turkish government’s ongoing security operations in the Turkey’s predominantly Kurdish south-east. Be that as it may, PKK’s such ghastly terror strikes will not resolve any ongoing disputes, and instead make the current political and regional dilemmas even more complex.
The PKK is a listed terrorist organisation and its political activities have been questioned by the Kurds too. So much so, that it even fought a turf war against other predominantly Kurdish organisations in Turkey. This type of self-conflicting and violent establishment with alleged links to drug trafficking and militant armed rebellions should not be allowed to operate in any country.
Moreover, its sadistic actions can never be explained or justified by the need to defend Kurds in the context of cultural suppression of the Kurdish identity in Turkey. Not only the Kurdish militant group PKK is causing deaths and destruction, it is also fast branding Turkey as a breeding ground for radicals and militants.
We, however, expect the Kurdish-Turkish peace process to resume aiming to resolve the long standing disputes between the two; a unilateral ceasefire to be implemented. The ongoing conflict has not only turned South-Eastern part of Turkey into a ‘full-scale warfare zone’ but is fast threatening the security, peace and stability of the entire country.
Additionally, the militant group’s recent political and violent activities are clearly going in favour of the ISIS. Apart from preaching terror, it apparently doesn’t have any particular purpose to serve.
We stand closely besides the victims of the recent terror attacks in Turkey and share their sorrow and grievances. Their loss is undoubtedly beyond repair.
