5 hurt in Mathbaria clash

PRE-POLLS VIOLENCE

At least five people were injured in a clash between the supporters of two chairman aspirants of Dhanisafa union in Mathbaria upazila in the district yesterday noon. The injured are Abdul Barek, 55, Emadul Akon, 40, Abdul Malek Molla, 40, Shaheen Sharif, 35, Md Sanaullah, 23 and Masum Hawlader, 25. Locals have rescued and sent them to Mathbaria hospital. Locals said at about 1.30 pm, supporters of independent candidate Md Rafiqual Islam bearing symbol ‘Barnacles’ were carrying out campaign at Dhanisafa bazaar. At that time supporters of Awami League (AL) candidate Md Harunur Rashid suddenly attacked them. Five supporters of independent candidate were injured and 6 motorbikes vandalized during the attack. However, AL candidate Harunur Rashid denied the allegation saying his supporters were not involved in the attack.  
But Mostafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Mathbaria police station, said the clash occurred between the supporters of boat and barnacles.
