Awami League senior leader Suranjit Sengupta yesterday said that the finance minister, AMA Muhith, and the former Bangladesh Bank (BB) governor, Atiur Rahman, cannot avoid responsibility for the recent swindling of money from the BB account with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Although they are not involved, they cannot avoid responsibility, he said while addressing a programme in the capital. He said Muhith cannot avoid responsibility.
“When you hold a responsible position, you must speak out responsibly and you must take the responsibility of your position. The swindling of USD 101 million from the BB account is not funny. It is public money not yours, so you should take the responsibility for it,” he said. Suranjit said incidents like the stock market scam and loan defaulting would not have happened had steps been
taken. He also said that employees of the finance department should discharge their duty properly and honestly so that such incidents do not recur.
Suranjit said the Sheikh Hasina government is taking steps to overcome the crisis. The former finance secretary, Fazle Kabir, has been made the new governor of Bangladesh Bank, and action will be taken against those who were involved in the incident, he added.
Meanwhile, talking to reporters, the road, transport and bridges minister, Obaidul Quader, yesterday said the government is embarrassed by the incident. The minister said as the former governor of Bangladesh Bank, Atiur Rahman cannot avoid responsibility.
“We are not suggesting that he is involved in the incident, but he cannot avoid responsibility,” he told journalists while inspecting the construction work of the Mymensingh-Dhaka highway yesterday morning.
Obaidul Quader, also a presidium member of the AL, said the government will do whatever is needed against those involved in the incident.
