Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon yesterday said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman dreamt to turn country’s tourism capital Cox’s Bazar into global recreation center like Switzerland to hold major international summits around the year, reports BSS.
“After Mass Upsurge of 1969, Bangabandhu told me - I (Bangabandhu) will make Bangladesh independent someday and turn Cox’s Bazar as international recreation hub as like as Switzerland,”
Menon recalled when addressing a tourism related programme at Hotel Abakash here.
Recalling Bangabandhu’s memories on his 97th Birthday yesterday, Menon said he was passing by Bangabandhu’s residence at Dhanmondi someday after the mass upsurge in 1969 while Bangabandhu was walking in front of the house.
“Bangabandhu called me and one of my companions to inquire our wellbeing, he said adding “during our conversation Bangabandhu told us about his dream regarding Cox’s Bazar.”
The minster was addressing a function titled “Photo Sharing and Review Contest of women travelers in Bangladesh” organised by tripzip, tours supported by Bangladesh Tourism Board (BTB).
Menon said the government is working to encourage adventure tourism as well as water sports in Cox’s Bazar to make the country’s tourism capital as a single international tourist destination.
Mentioning last year’s Buddhist tourism circuit conference organised by the Bangladesh government in the capital, the minister said “We are getting good response from our neighbouring countries especially from Myanmar to get more Buddhist tourists.”
Congratulating the women travelers participating into the tourism related photo competition, the minister said more involvement of women in tourism and travel sector will strengthen tourist safety environment in the country.
Noting that tourism can be the second largest foreign exchange earning source of the country after RMG, the minster urged everyone from all walks of life to work in flourishing tourism from their respective positions.
Former civil aviation and tourism secretary Khurshed Alam Chowdhury, Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation Chairman Dr Aparup Chowdhury, CEO of BTB Akhtaruzzaman Khan Kabir, Country Representative of UN Women Christine Hunter, president of Bangladesh Women Chamber And Commerce And Industries (BWCCI) Selima Ahmed, BTB Member Monowara Hakim and President of Aviation and Tourism Journalist Forum (ATJF) Bangladesh Nadira Kiron also spoke on the occasion.
