The mango trees under Rajshahi district have growers hopeful of a plentiful production during the current season.
Mannaf Ali, a mango grower of Charghat Upazila, said he has over 200 mango trees in his orchard. He has cultivated a variety of mangoes this season. He earned a handsome profit last year and is hopeful of crossing that figure this season.
The soil and climate of many areas under the division is suitable for mango farming and, as a result, its cultivation is getting popular, said Hasan Waliullah, Scientific Officer of Rajshahi Fruit Research Center.
The margin of profitability and easy cultivation encourages farmers to cultivate the fruit commercially on their lands, playing a vital role in changing the socio-economic condition of the region, he added.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said trees in the district are set to yield a large quantity of fruit, and more than 95 per cent of mangoes can be seen ripening on the branches.
If the weather remains congenial, the region will certainly witness a good yield of the juicy fruit this season. DAE informed that growers can contact agricultural officials for necessary assistance.
Meanwhile, mango growers are busy taking care of their orchards. It is learnt that a number of varieties, including Lengra, Gopalbhog, Fazlee, Amropali, Khirsapati and Mohanbhog are grown abundantly in the region.
Dr. Alim Uddin, Principal Scientific Officer of Rajshahi Fruit Research Center, recommended that farmers spray pesticides (0.2 gram, grainy) or liquid (0.5ml) with one litre water from the HimidaCloropid group. The farmers can also spray fungicide.
In this season, around 16,583 hectares of land have been brought under mango cultivation and 2,15,519 metric ton mango production targets have been set in the district.
