Francophone week begins at DU
A week-long Francophone Festival began at the Institute of Modern Languages of Dhaka University (DU) on Wednesday. Dhaka University Vice-chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique inaugurated it as the special guest. The Institute of Modern Languages of DU organised the festival.
Director of the Institute of Modern Languages Prof Iffat Ara Nasreen Majid presided over the inaugural function while Emeritus Professor of Bangla Department Dr Anisuzzaman addressed it as the chief guest.
Director General of International Mother Language Institute Prof Dr Jinat Imtiaz Ali delivered key-note speech.
French Ambassador to Bangladesh Sophie Aubert and some other diplomats from Francophone countries in Bangladesh were present on this occasion.
Vice-chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique urged the diplomats to come forward with their helping hands to develop language skills of DU students.

JU’s philosophy dept reunion today
SAVAR: The reunion of Philosophy Department of Jahangirnagar University (JU) will be held today on the campus here.
JU Philosophy Alumni Association (JUPAA) arranged the function while JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Farzana Islam is expected to address the function as the chief guest.
Talking to BSS, Secretary of JUPAA Farid Ahmed confirmed this.
The day-long function includes colorful rally, funny games, raffle draw, grand lunch and finally cultural function at Selim Al Deen Muktamancha.
The JUPAA also will give honorary special award to the founder chairman of Philosophy Department Professor Dr Obayedur Rahman for his outstanding contribution to build up the department.

No alternative to study: UGC chief
There is no alternative to study for entering the world knowledge pool, University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC) Chairman Professor Abdul Mannan said on Wednesday.
Referring to higher education, he said the goals and objectives of universities are creation of new knowledge, storage of knowledge and dissemination of knowledge, according to a release.
Addressing a function of the fresher’s reception ceremony for the newly enrolled students of Jahangirnagar University as the chief guest, the chairman said that huge expansion of higher education has taken place in the country over the years.
“The enrollment at tertiary level almost stands at 32 lakhs, which is a big achievement for Bangladesh,” Professor Mannan added, the release said.
Jahangirnagar University organised the fresher’s reception ceremony with its Vice-chancellor Professor Dr Farzana Islam in the chair. Pro- Vice-Chancellor, Treasurer, Registrar, Deans of different faculties, Directors of different institutes, teachers and students of the university were present on the occasion, it added.

UIU  vice-chancellor honoured
United International University (UIU) Vice Chancellor (VC) Professor M Rezwan Khan has been selected as distinguished lecturer of IEEE for his outstanding research work on DC Power system for the year of 2017-18, says a press release. IEEE is the World Largest Professional association for the Electrical and Electronic Engineers.   
A total of 12 professors around the world have earned this honour, of them 3 from USA, 2 from UK, 3 from Canada, 1 from Denmark, 1 from Argentina, 1 from Korea and 1 from Bangladesh.       
From Bangladesh, Prof M Rezwan Khan has achieved this prestigious honor of IEEE Distinguished Lecturer.
