The public hospitals all over the country yesterday provided free medical services to patients as part of their initiatives to pay homage to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman coinciding with his 96th birth anniversary.
"The free treatment was provided to the patients from 8am to 5pm yesterday," a health ministry spokesman told BSS.
Simultaneously, he said, the hospitals were also offered improved diets like Polau, chicken roasts and egg curries to the patients admitted in the facilities.
"Around 216 patients received free medical services at the outdoor of the hospital ... the patients were distributed improved diets at noon", said Dr M Jahangir Alam, Associate Professor of National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR).
"I took my younger brother to the (Dhaka Medical College) Hospital for treatment when he was given the ticket free of cost", said one Sohel who came to the facility from Azimpur area. DMCH officials said 51 professors, 35 associate professors, 45 assistant professors and 240 medical officers provided free medical consultancy services to 2360 patients who reported at the country's biggest state-run facility.
Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital also provided free treatment to some 1700 patients on the day.
In Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Vice-chancellor Professor Dr Kamrul Hasan inaugurated free medical services when 5,528 patients received free medical treatment at different section of the hospital.
BSMMU officials said some 400 officers, nurses and employees joined the campaigning by assisting the doctors to provide the free medical services.
Sir Salumullah Medical College Hospital, Mugda Medical College Hospital, Kurmitola General Hospital, National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), Kidney Institute, Mental Health Service Institute, Matuail Mother and Child Hospital and the Institute of Eye science are other major facilities which also carried out the free treatment campaign.
