Diarrhea causes kidney failure: Experts

 When kidney diseases have emerged as common health problem, leading kidney specialists at a discussion have warned that dehydration caused by diarrhea and vomiting may lead to acute kidney failure, reports BSS.
As children frequently are affected by diarrhea or vomiting, they are more vulnerable to acute kidney injury, they told the discussion titled "Kidney diseases: children" at Rajuk Uttara Model College in the city on Wednesday.
As part of the massive awareness campaign, Save Life Foundation and Gift Live Foundation jointly organised the discussion to make the students aware of kidney ailment.
President of Bangladesh Kidney Foundation Prof Harun-or-Rashid said body rapidly losses excessive water, when someone is affected by diarrhea and vomiting, which cause acute kidney failure.
"Diarrhea can cause or worsen kidney failure. There have been many reports about renal failure after serious diarrhea. In case of diarrhea, the whole body's effective blood volume will experience sharp decline. Blood flow to the kidneys will be suddenly reduced and cause hypoperfusion in the kidneys," he added.
Diarrhea can cause dehydration, electrolyte disorders, malnutrition and disturbed internal environment, he said adding as a result, kidneys will be impaired and kidney functions will be lost and kidney failure will occur.
"Being affected by diarrhea, patients should take adequate saline and normal water to avoid dehydration. Otherwise, excessive losses of water may cause acute kidney injury," he added.
Principal of Rajuk Uttara Model College Brigadier General MM Salehin, Prof Dr Arup Ratan Chowdhury, Chairman of Pharmacy Department of Dhaka University Prof Shitesh Chandra Bachar, Chairman of Save Life Foundation and Gift Live Foundation Kidney specialist Dr Sohely Ahmed Sweety addressed the discussion.
Teachers and students of the college, leaders of the Save Life Foundation and Gift Live Foundation were present.
Prof Shitesh said, "We should not intake medicines without doctor's advices. Rampant medicine intake can harm kidney and other organs." He also advised not take pain killer medicine to avoid kidney injury.
Dr Sohely said unhealthy lifestyle leads to increase kidney ailment as Bangladesh is hugely suffering from the disease due to rapidly changing food habits and way of life. The people are being habituated with first food items and advancement of technology are shirking space of physical movement resulting in many non-communicable diseases including diabetics, heart diseases and high blood pressure, she added.
At the function, Chairperson of Save Life Foundation and Gift Life Foundation received an award from Rajuk Uttara Model College as a complement to aware its students of kidney diseases.
