Walton Central Zone emerged champions in the fourth edition when they drew the sixth and final round of the Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) against BCB North Zone at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur yesterday.
This is the second title for Central Zone after the inception of the BCL longer version competition. The winning team earlier clinched the title of the maiden edition in the 2012-13 season.
By winning the title, Central Zone levelled with Prime Bank South Zone, who snatched the silverware in 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons on the trot.
Resuming the final day at 133-3, BCB North Zone
stretched the second innings before being declared at 293-8 at lunch, where they added 160 runs and set a target of 366 for Central Zone.
Earlier, Central Zone in first innings compiled 306 in response to North Zone’s first innings total of 378.
Nazmul Hossain Shanto went for 55 off 105 with the help of eight boundaries. Jahurual Islam remained unbeaten on 83. He clattered seven fours across the fence as well as one six in his 92-ball knock. Shafaq Al Zabir was not out 17.
Tanvir Haider picked up four wickets, while Mohammad Sharif snapped up two wickets for Central Zone.
In reply, Central Zone finished the day with 257-2, where Marshal Ayub making an unbeaten 101 and Rokibul Hasan scoring an indefatigable 54.
Shykat Ali chipped in with 57 and Shamsur Rahman fell for 38. Farhad Hossain was adjudged the player of the match and got Tk 25,000 for outstanding batting performance.
After the end of the sixth round, Central Zone notched up 67 points to hold the pole position and awarded with Tk 35 lakh as championship money.
BCB tournament committee chairman Saiful Islam Sawpon as chief guest distributed the prize amongst the winners. Nazrul Islam, AVP of Islami Bank Limited was also present.
At Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah, Islami Bank East Zone drew the match with Prime Bank South zone to be second place and rewarded with Tk 15 lakh as runners-up. They earned 57 points, just 10 points behind the leader.
East Zone in first innings made 442 with Alok Kapali’s 111, after which South Zone piled up 602 with Mosaddek Hossain’s 152 and Sohag Gazi’s 146.
Henceforth, East Zone ensured the predicted draw scoring 189 in their second innings without losing any wicket. Liton Das stayed at stumps on 103.
Irfan Sukkur was on 75 not out. Mosaddek was named the player of the match and received Tk 25,000.
