The Kingdom of Women becomes closer by plane

The Lugu lake is the mother lake of Mosuo people who has fascinating and mysterious tradition of marriage. Their tribe is regarded as a Kindom of Women  since it is a matriarchal society.

For years, tourists had to take a long bus ride to Lugu Lake from Ninglang Yi Autonomous County, Lijiang City to experience the misterious cuture of Mosuo people and to have sightseeings aroud the lake. On October 12, 2015, Lijiang Ninglang Luguhu Airport went into operation, and the Kingdom of Women has ushered in a greater number of tourists ever since then.

In Luoshui Village by Lugu Lake, Helen from Beijing is running a beautifully decorated cafe. When Helen came to the Lugu Lake three years ago, she immediately fell in love with its blue water. Helen believes that transportation is very important for the Lugu Lake region.

“In the past, it was really not easy to access the beauty of the Lugu Lake,” said Helen. Before the Ninglang Luguhu Airport went into operation, it was a great trouble for her to travel between Ninglang and Beijing. The bus ride from Ninglang to Lijiang would take six to seven hours. Then she had fly from Lijiang to Kunming before flying back to Beijing. “A single trip could take two or three days,” Helen recalled.

 “I looked forward to seeing the beautiful Lugu Lake, and now my a dream comes true,” said Ms. Yang Min from Hangzhou. On March 6, Ms. Yang’s flight took off at 8:30 am from Kunming Changhsui Airport and arrived at Ninglang Luguhu Airport at 9:40 am. Yang Min suffers from motion sickness. If it were not for the airport, she would not have had the courage to travel such long distances.

“The airport has brought Lugu Lake closer to the outside world. Except for a few people travelling on business, most of the passengers come to the Lugu Lake for sightseeing,” said Chen Guoguang, a manager of Lugu Lake Tourist Area.

The Luguhu Airport, a high-plateau airport located at an altitude of 3,293 metres, is the highest airport in Yunnan Province. In order to protect tourists from altitude sickness, the Airport is equipped with oxygen supplies and heating devices. According to Qian Zhijian, director of Flight Operation Department of the Lugu Airport, the airport is the first in Yunnan to provide oxygen supplies and heating devices.
