RAFIQUL ISLAM AZAD

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has called a meeting of the party’s highest policy- making body, the standing committee, tonight to review preparations for its national council, scheduled for Saturday at Dhaka’s Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh.
The standing committee meeting will be held at 9:00pm at the BNP supremo's Gulshan office, with Khaleda Zia in the chair, Shyrul Kabir Khan, a member of the chairperson’s media wing confirmed.
The meeting is likely to be the last of the present 19-member standing committee, which was formed at the fifth council held on December 9, 2009.
The meeting will discuss all aspects of the preparation for the party’s much-awaited sixth national council to make it a success, said party leaders.
The standing committee will finalize the constitution amendment proposals, draft of Khaleda Zia’s speech and the secretary general’s report to the council, they said.
The meeting will also discuss the matter of appointment of the party’s new secretary general for a three-year term, said leaders.
The constitution amendment sub-committee yesterday (Wednesday) finalized the draft by reviewing 55 proposals that have come from the grassroots level and central committees, according to party sources.
The drafting committee, headed by standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan, has finalized the speech of the party chairperson, which she would deliver at the council, said the sources.
Besides, Khaleda Zia has also met convenors of different other sub-committees to be apprised about the development of their preparations ahead of the council.
BNP acting secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, said many things related to the council would be discussed at the standing committee meeting.
“The preparation for the council will of course come up for discussion,” he added.
Standing committee member, Nazrul Islam Khan, termed the standing committee meeting as a review meeting ahead of the national council.
“The meeting will review all aspects of the preparations of the council and latest development in the political arena,” he said.
Another standing committee member, Lt Gen (Retd) Mahbubur Rahman, said the proposals to amend the constitution, draft of the chairperson’s speech and progress of the preparation for the council may come up in the discussion.
He said the meeting may also discuss the work of different sub-committees formed earlier to make the council a success.
The BNP yesterday invited the Prime Minister and Awami League president, Sheikh Hasina, and AL general secretary, Syed Ashraful Islam, to join the council.
A BNP delegation, led by Abul Khair Bhuiyan, went to the AL chief’s political office at Dhanmondi in the afternoon and handed over the invitation.
