A day after the resignation of Dr Atiur Rahman as Bangladesh Bank Governor and removal of two Deputy Governors over the recent cyber heist, Finance Minister AMA Muhith yesterday hinted that a “thorough recasting” was needed at the central bank management, as it was not in a “healthy condition”.
The finance minister said, “Various systems of Bangladesh Bank require serious reforms, as they are not in a healthy condition.”
Muhith was talking to reporters at the secretariat yesterday.
The minister, however, did not go into the details of the recasting plan, but hinted that the new Governor, Fazle Kabir, would accomplish the task.
Muhith said the new governor will return to Bangladesh on March 18 and take over his duties a day or two later.
He also said that Fazle Kabir would form a search committee to decide on the appointment of two new deputy governors, which can be a lengthy process.
On the role of information technology specialist Rakesh Asthana, the minister said his responsibilities would be trimmed.
Hackers stole over $81 million of funds from the Bangladesh Bank’s account with Federal Reserve Bank in New York.
On Bank Secretary Dr M Aslam Alam, the minister said he was well informed about the heist due to his position and can’t avoid responsibility.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Administration issued a circular on the appointment of Member of Privatisation Commission Yunus Rahman as the new Secretary to the Bank Division.
