The teachers of public universities expressed their dissatisfaction over the delay in fulfilling their demand to remove salary discriminations in the eighth National Pay Scale.
Speaking at a press conference of the Bangladesh University Teachers’ Association (FBUTA) on Tuesday, they said the government’s dilly-dallying attitude has further complicated the situation and created resentment among teachers.
Prof Dr ASM Maksud Kamal, Secretary General of FBUTA, said, “Teachers have suspended their ongoing movement because they expect a peaceful and honorable solution. They have been patiently cooperating with all quarters concerned.”
“The teachers have a meeting with the Cabinet sub-committee on salary discrimination on March 24. If their demands don’t get a logical resolution, FUBTA will announce the next movement after holding its general meeting at 11am on March 29,” he added.
“The leaders of the FBUTA, at a press conference, will expose before the nation those who have obstructed the issue. We hope everyone will come forward to fulfill the teachers’ demand for the cause of expanding quality higher education,” he said.
Meanwhile, the teachers of BCS General Education Association have taken several measures, including rallies and submitting memoranda, seeking permission for a meeting with the Prime Minister.
The move is a result of their unhappiness with the government’s recent announcement of upgrading only 50 per cent Professors to Grade-3 instead of 100 per cent.
The college teachers also expressed dissatisfaction over not upgrading the Associate Professors to Grade-4.
They claimed it was their long-pending demand for creation of Grade-1 for the Education cadre, Grade-2 for Professors of Honours’ college and Teachers Training College as the recommendation of Enam Committee of 1983 and Secretary Committee of 1986.
They also demanded that the government implement the clear recommendation of the committees to upgrade Associate Professors to Grade-4 and Professors for Grade-3, but nothing had been done yet.
“It is most unexpected when the government itself issues a gazette of Grade-8 for the cadre at the entry level in the eighth National Pay Scale, but later downgrades it to Grade-9 in the sub-committee meeting,” the teachers said.
They said they have had held certain programmes in protest of the government’s decision and for fulfillment of their demands. They will hold rallies in each organizational unit of the Association from 11am to 12pm on March 21. Similar programmes will be held in the district on March 28 and human chains will be taken out in each unit on March 31.
