Today is the 97th birthday of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Since the re assumption of state power in 1996, Awami League has been observing the day as the National Children's Day, reports BSS.
On this day in 1920, Bangabandhu, the indomitable leader of Bangalee nation and the chief architect of an independent Bangladesh, was born in a respectable Muslim family in remote Tungipara village of Gopalganj sub-division, now district. The Father of the Nation was assassinated along with most of his family members on the fateful night of August 15 in 1975 when he was only 55 years old.
The nation will observe the day with extensive programme with fanfare and merriment. The day is a public holiday.
On the eve of the day, President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages greeting the nation. At 10 in the morning, the Prime Minister will lay wreaths at the Memorial Mausoleum of Bangabandhu at Tungipara in Gopalganj. Besides, she will participate in the milad and doa mahfil, children’s rally, discussion, book fair and cultural function to be organised on the premises of Bangabandhu Memorial Mausoleum.
The ruling Awami League (AL) and its associate bodies have chalked out a two-day programme in observance of the day.
The programmes include hoisting of national and party flags atop their offices at 6-30 am and placing of wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu at Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi Road-32 in the capital at 7 am.
Awami League will organise a discussion at city’s Bangabandhu International Conference Centre at 3-30 pm on Friday (March 18). AL president Sheikh Hasina will chair the discussion.
The Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Information Ministry, Jatiya Grantha Kendro, DFP and the Mass Communication Directorate have taken initiatives to hold week-long book fair and screening documentaries on the life of Bangabandhu and the War of Liberation at district and upazila headquarters.
The day will also be observed at Bangladesh missions abroad in a befitting manner.
The speech of independence of Bangabandhu delivered at the historic Race Course Maidan, renamed as Suhrawardy Udyan, will be played on microphones throughout the day tomorrow.
Milad and doa mahfils will be organised at mosques and prayer sessions at other places of worship across the country seeking eternal peace of the departed souls of Bangabandhu and his family members.
Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television and other
private TV channels and radio stations will air special programmes highlighting the significance of the day in the life of Bangalees. The national dailies will publish special supplements on the occasion.
AL’s associate and likeminded bodies and other socio-cultural-professional organisations including Awami Juba League, Awami Swechchasebak League, Jatiya Sramik League, Mahila Awami League, Juba Mahila League, Krishak League and Chhatra League have also drawn up extensive programmes.
Bangabandhu Shishu-Kishore Mela, Dhaka University, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University and other organisations will also observe the day organising discussions, doa and milad mahfils and prayer sessions, painting competitions, blood donation camps and distribution of sweets.
