Indian scientists meet Prof Arefin
An eight-member scientific team led by Professor Parul Chakrabarti, Director of Bose Institute of Kolkata, on Tuesday called on Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor (VC) AAMS Arefin Siddique at the latter's office of the university.
Other team members were Prof Partha Majumder, Prof Bikas K Chakrabarti,Prof Amita Majumder, Dr Indrani Bose, Geeta Talukder and Kaberi Chakrabarti.
Director of DU Bose Centre for Advanced Study and Research in Natural Sciences Shamima Choudhury and Coordinator of JC Bose Trust Bangladesh Dr Ferdousi Begum were present on the occasion.
During the meeting, they discussed the possibilities of undertaking joint collaborative academic and research programmes regarding scientific works of renowned Scientists SN Bose and JC Bose between Dhaka University and higher educational institutions in India.
IU Math dept gets new chairman
KUSHTIA: Assistant Professor M Nurul Islam was made new chairman of Mathematics Department of Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia yesterday. IU acting registrar SM Abdul Latif confirmed the matter around 11am.
University Vice-chancellor Abdul Hakim Sarker appointed him to the post for the next three years, he added.
Nurul Islam replaced to the Assistant Professor M Asaduzzaman of the same department. He will be the fifth chairman of the department.
Varsities to observe Nat’l Children Day
Dhaka University has chalked out an elaborate programme to observe the 96th birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and National Children Day-2016 today amid much enthusiasm and festivity.
As part of the programme, DU teachers, students, officers and employees led by Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique will place wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu at around 7am.
Later, a discussion will be held at Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) on the campus with VC Prof Arefin in the chair at 10.30am.
DU Music department will organise a cultural function at TSC at 6.30pm. Besides, prayers and doa will be offered at the residential halls, hostels, mosques and upasanalayas to mark the day.
An art competition will be held at the TSC cafeteria. Children from DU Laboratory School and College, Udayan High School, Nilkhet High School and the university residential area will take part in the competition.
Meanwhile, the authorities of Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia have taken day-long issues to observe the day.
Head of the Public relation office Ataul Haque said the programmes, included with drawing competition of children at TSCC around 10am, bringing out colorful procession atop the administration building at 11am lead by Vice Chancellor Abdul Hakim Sarker, discussion on Bangabandhu, cutting cake and prize giving ceremony to children of drawing competition around 11.30am.
Students Advisor M Anowar Hossain will preside the discussion session while various departmental teachers, students, officials attend at the program.
Besides, Islamic University unit of Bangladesh Chatra League will also observe the day with cutting cake and colorful procession at the campus.
Orientation of JU freshers held
SAVAR: The authority of Jahangirnagar University (JU) welcomed the first year students of the university under academic session 2015-16 at Jahir Raihan auditorium on the campus yesterday.
JU registrar Abu Bakar Siddique placed the students to the deans of six faculties and directors of two institutes while the deans of the faculties and directors of the institutes received their respective students.
JU Vice-Chancellor Farzana Islam presided over the programme while the Chairman of Bangladesh University Grants Commission Professor Abdul Mannan addressed the function as the chief guest.
Director of JU Student Welfare and Counseling Center Rasheda Akhter delivered welcome address while Pro-VC Abul Hossain, Treasurer Professor Dr. Abul Khair and proctor Tapan Kumar Shaha addressed the function among others.
Addressing the function, Professor Abdul Mannan said that the students enter the ocean of knowledge through the orientation programme. You have to be qualified by gathering knowledge from this ocean.
He also urged the students to follow the rules and regulations of the university although they are different from each other by religion, culture and socio-economic background.
Professor Mannan also asked the students to work for implementing the vision 2021 announced by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Over 2500 new comer students joined the orientation reception.
