A court in the capital yesterday granted bail to BNP leader Gayeshwar Chandra Roy in a defamation case, reports UNB.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Zakir Hossain Tipu passed the order when he appeared before the court and sought bail in the case.
Earlier, the court summoned Gayeshwar Chandra Roy to appear before it on March 16 in the case.
The officer-in-charge (investigation) of Shahbagh Police Station submitted a probe report to the court on February 18 stating that the BNP leader’s remarks on the Liberation War martyrs were found to be true.
On January 21 last, the court asked police to investigate the comments of Gayeshwar and submit a report to it on February 18.
Amid the criticism of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia for questioning the number of people who embraced martyrdom in the country’s 1971 Liberation War, Gayeshwar on December 25 last called for an opinion poll to determine the exact figure of martyred freedom fighters.
He also claimed that the intellectuals, martyred during the Liberation War, had been ‘anti-liberation elements’ who ‘drew salaries and allowances from Pakistan till the end of the war’, and they died like ‘fools’. Monindra Kumar Nath, son of martyred freedom fighter Dinesh Chandra Nath filed the defamation case against him.
