A man was hacked to death and 10 others were injured in a clash between supporters of Awami League and BNP at Jamtala Bazaar in Shibganj upazila on Monday night. The deceased was identified as Mahtab Uddin, 46, director of Shibgnaj upazila Palli Bidyut Samity and an inhabitant of Khaduil village of the upazila. Police said the trouble started when supporters of AL and BNP candidates for the upcoming union parishad polls locked in a clash over election campaign at around 11.30pm when some AL supporters vandalised and set fire to the BNP’s election campaign office at Jamtala Bazaar. Following the incident BNP supporters attacked AL activists at Khaduil village.
At one stage they stabbed Mahtab, Buriganj union parishad chairman candidate, leaving him injured seriously. Mahtab died on the way to hospital.
