In the wake of resignation of Dr Atiur Rahman, the government yesterday decided to appoint ex-finance secretary Fazle Kabir as new Governor of the Bangladesh Bank, reports UNB. Finance Minister AMA Muhith disclosed this while talking to reporters at his ministry. Fazle Kabir, chairman of the Board of Directors of Sonali Bank Limited, is now in New York. He will return home on March 18. Earlier in the day, embattled Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman quit amid a huge row over the heist of $101 million from the central bank’s account with the US Federal Reserve Bank. The Governor’s resignation came following his meeting with the Prime Minister at her office, according to the PMO’s Press Wing. As reporters wanted to know what the government is thinking about new BB Governor, Muhith said, “The Governor has already been made. Everything has done to appoint former finance secretary Fazle Kabir as new Governor.” Muhith also said a probe team, headed by ex-Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, has been formed to look into the stealing of money from the Central Bank’s account at the US Reserve Bank.
Fazle Kabir was made the Finance Secretary on June 21, 2012. He later joined as chairman of the Board of Directors of Sonali Bank Limited on May 6, 2015. Obtaining BA (Hons) and Master Degree in Economics from Chittagong University, he started his career in the Bangladesh Civil Service (Railway: Transportation and Commercial) cadre back in October 1980. He then joined the BCS (Admin) service in October 1983.
During his 34 years’ tenure in the civil bureaucracy, Fazle Kabir served in various key positions in different ministries as well as in the administration. He served as Secretary of the Ministry of Railways before joining as Finance Secretary in 2012. He also served in the board of Janata Bank Limited (2008-2010) and Bangladesh Bank (2012-2014) as Director.
