Around 30 per cent of total stalls in the Khulna International Trade Fair-2016 (KITF-16) are yet to get ready for showcasing products even after its formal opening on March 6 at Khulna Circuit House ground in the city.
Participants attributed the main reasons of being late in preparing their stalls before inauguration to delay in the hand-over of stalls by the KITF authorities. Economic Affairs adviser to the Prime Minister Dr Moshiur Rahman inaugurated the fair as chief guest on March 6 evening.
Khulna Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) have been organising a month-long 15th Khulna International Trade Fair in collaboration with Elin Traders of Khulna aims at promoting local manufactures and producers and providing a platform for companies to market their brands and present their latest products.
A total of 152 stalls and six pavilions have been installing at the fair venue for display by the different organisations from home and abroad. Businessmen from India, China, Iran, Pakistan, Thailand, Malaysia and Korea were set up their stalls at the fair ground, claimed spokesman Md Imrul Hasan of fair control room. The entrepreneurs, especially those who are late in preparation of their stalls, said they got allotment from the authorities concerned at the eleventh hour of starting the fair which may put a damper to their seasonal business. And that is why we are late in preparation for showcasing our products.
Sheikh Jahangir Kabir, in-charge of Kiam Cookeries, expressing his dismay over the delay in hand-over of the stall said he got allotment of his stall on the inaugural day of the fair. He said it will take five to seven days to get the stall fully ready but I had to pay for the whole month which may hamper my business. Besides, some entrepreneurs said they managed their stalls from the third party for which they are late in getting ready. According to them, a number of influential people take allotment of some stalls and then sell the same to the third party at higher prices.
However, KITF-16 director Shafiqur Rahman Lablu who deals with the activities of the fair said due to some unavoidable circumstances like poor response from the participants and addition of some new provisions to make this year’s fair attractive to both local and the overseas participants made them to be a little bit late in the allotment process. “Response is so far more or less poor. But we could run promotional campaign of our new products here in the fair. The consumers have now become aware of them,” said Amirul Islam, salesman of Anonya Fashions, a ladies wear stall.
The KITF-16 kicked off on March 6 amid poor interest from both local and foreign participants against the backdrop of economical impasse. “We had no other option but to fulfill the required participants through floatation of several tenders which mainly forced us to make delay in allotment of stalls,” said KCCI vice-president Advocate Md Saiful Islam.
