Suspended Rajshahi mayor Mosaddek Hoissain Bulbul was remanded in jail custody yesterday when he surrendered in court after fleeing for several months. The court of metropolitan magistrate Zahidul Islam rejected his bail plea in three cases related to use of explosives. The cases were filed at Boalia Police Station during the BNP-led alliance’s political agitation in January and February 2015. Bulbul, also vice-president of the city unit of BNP and convener of the city unit of Jubo Dal, surrendered around 11.30 am in the chief metropolitan magistrate court's that had issued an arrest warrant against him on March 7. He was produced in the district and sessions court in connection with five other cases, including one of murder. The court decided to hear his bail plea later. Around 1pm, Bulbul was taken to Islam’s court and was sent to Rajshahi Central jail at 1.30 pm. Bulbul faces nine criminal charges in connection with political violence committed in early-2015. Police have submitted charge-sheets in four cases, said his lawyer Roisul Islam. The suspended mayor prayed for bail in all nine cases and the courts denied it in three, granted it in one, and decided to hear the other five later. The government suspended Bulbul from the post of mayor on May 7 last year as he was charge-sheeted in the murder case of police constable Siddhartha Roy.
