Healthcare professionals at an international conference called for expansion of alternative medicine such as ayurvedic, unani and homeopathy in the country to drastically cut medical expenses.
Integration of alternative or traditional medicine into the national healthcare system and its wider use can contribute greatly to the universal health coverage that the Bangladesh government has targeted to achieve by 2032, they said while addressing the conference at Senate Hall of Dhaka University recently.
The entire world is now heading towards traditional medicine which has been proved highly effective in disease treatment and prevention with low side effects, they said, adding that alternative medicine is less expensive than allopathic or mainstream medicine.
Bangladesh is lagging behind in many countries, particularly India, China and Japan, regarding expansion of the use of alternative medicine, they said, suggesting strengthening research activities and taking a holistic approach for
promotion of alternative medicine in our country.
Ayurved & Naturopathy Association of Bangladesh (AYUNS), Dhaka University’s Department of Pharmacy, Public Health Foundation of Bangladesh, and Hamdard University Bangladesh jointly organised the 4th AYUNS International Conference, the largest annual event of stakeholders in alternative medicine.
Prof. M Iqbal Arslan, Secretary General of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA), attended as the chief guest at the inaugural session with President of AYUNS Dr. Samir Kumar Saha in the chair.
