Speaker leaves for London
Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, also the Chairperson of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) executive committee, yesterday left Dhaka for CPA headquarters in London.
A parliament secretariat release said the Speaker will take part in "Commonwealth Africa Summit - 2016" and the 134th IPU conference at Lusaka, the capital of Zambia from March 19 to 23. Earlier, she will leave London for Lusaka on March 17. Dr Chaudhury will hold meeting with the CPU Canadian representatives and also participate in different programmes in London.

Youth held with cigarettes
Members of Customs Intelligence with the help of Armed Police Battalions (APBn) yesterday arrested a youth with 245 cartons of foreign cigarettes worth about Taka five lakh at Hazrat Shahjalal ® International Airport in the capital. Alamgir Hossain Shimul, a senior assistant superintendent of police (ASP) of APBN, told BSS that they seized foreign cigarettes from a passenger Mohammad Arif, 35, who landed here from Doha by a flight (QR-636) of Qatar Airways yesterday morning. The illegal imported cigarettes are 195 cartons of Esse and 50 others of Benison brand.

Elderly man killed in Ctg
An elderly man was killed after a branch of a tree fell on him at Napura village under Banshkhali upazila of Chittagong on Saturday morning.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Ismail, 65, hailed from Jungle Napura of Banshkhali upazila. Police said Ismail was critically injured after a branch of a tree fell on him around 9.30am as he was going to the pond while the workers were cutting a tree, which he sold to a tree dealer.

Shibir man held with arms
Police in a drive arrested a Shibir cadre along with a LG (Light Gun) and two rounds of bullet from East Chamble area under Banskhali Upazila in Chittagong yesterday.
The arrestee was identified as Mohammad Ripon, son of Mohammad Jahangir of East Chamble of Banskhali Upazila in Chittagong.  “Acting on trip-off we have nabbed Ripon from his relative’s home at Chamble in Banskhali. He is accused in eight cases of murder and subversive activities,” said Swapan Kumar Mozumdar, officer-in-charge of Banskhali Police Station.
