Katka Tragedy Day observed at KU

Khulna University (KU) observed the 12th anniversary of Katka Tragedy on Sunday with due solemnity through various programmes. The vice-chancellor, treasurer, registrar (acting), heads of faculty, director of students’ welfare, hall provosts, deans, teachers, students and employees of the university attended the day-long mourning programmes.
In a tragic incident on March 13 in 2004, nine students of the Architecture Department of Khulna University (KU) and two students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) met their watery graves in the Bay of Bengal at Katka, adjacent the Sundarbans while they were bathing in the sea beach.
A sudden a sea wave came and washed them away into the sea. Many students managed to swim ashore while 11 students of the 78-student team went missing. Since this tragic incident the university authorities declared the day as university Mourning Day and observed it every year.
Nine KU students Arnaz Rifat Rupa, Kawser Ahmed Khan, Ashrafuzzaman Toha, Kazi Abdul Mueed bin Walid, Munadil Raihan alias Shuvo, Abdullahel-Baki, Maksudul Aziz, Mostazi Nipun, Mahmudur Rahman Rasel and two BUET students Samiul Hasan Shahriar and Shamsul Arefin lost their lives in Katka incident while they were on a study tour by a water vessel (launch).
To mark the day, the university and halls authorities have chalked out programmes, which included wearing black badges, mourning procession, placing of wreaths at the “Katka Monument” built on Khulna University campus in memory of those missing students, photo exhibition, feeding the destitute, offering prayer for departed souls at KU Jame Mosque, cultural programme on the university premise and condolence meeting.
A mourning procession, led by Vice-chancellor of KU Prof Dr Md Fayek-Uzzaman, was brought out from central Shaheed Minar in the morning and it terminated at Katka Tragedy Memorial on the campus.
The vice-chancellor, hall provosts, deans, teachers and students of different faculties and activists of different cultural organisations of the university placed flowers at the memorial.
