A mobile court yesterday sentenced two people, including the matchmaker, to seven days’ jail term for arranging marriage of an underage girl at Shakharipota village in Sharsha upazila on Friday night, reports UNB.
Police said being informed by local people, a mobile court led by Sharsha Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Abdus Salam with the help of police conducted a raid on the house of one Shilpi Begum where arrangements were all set to solemnise the marriage of her daughter, who is a student of class VIII.
They court arrested matchmaker Shabuddin, 28, of Shakharipota village, and bridegroom Liton Biswas, 25, son of Shahjahan Ali of Dhannyokhola village.
The court also sentenced the bridegroom and the matchmaker to seven days’ jail and fined Shilpi Begum Tk1,000 for arranging the marriage.
