PAY SCALE ROW

Public varsity teachers give Mar 29 deadline

Public University teachers have given a deadline of March 29, their fourth so far, to the government to fulfill their demands “honourably” on salary and grade discrimination in the eighth National Pay Scale. They will await the Cabinet Sub-Committee meeting on salary discrimination on March 24, before deciding the next course of action at their meeting on March 29. The Cabinet Sub-Committee held a meeting at the Secretariat on Thursday, but no decision was taken on the issue of salary disparity. The meeting held that a decision would be taken at their next ession, where the teachers’ representatives would be present. Earlier, the Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers’ Association (FBUTA) gave an ultimatum till March 12 to take stock of the Sub-Committee meeting held on March 10. As per the previous schedule, the FBUTA yesterday held a meeting with the representatives of the 37 public universities at the Club of Dhaka University and decided to give more time to the government. Prof Dr ASM Maksud Kamal, Secretary General of FBUTA said, “We held a meeting with the teachers today. As per their decision, we have given some time to the government.” “There is a meeting of the Sub-Committee on March 24. After the session, we will hold our meeting on March 29 to decide the next course of action,” he added. Professor Farid Uddin, President of FBUTA said, “Our movement is on for 10 months. We have to consider the academic life of students. Therefore, we have extended our deadline.” However, they said they would not accept any ‘illogical’ decision of the government regarding their issues.  Leaders of BCS General Education Association are not happy over the government’s “sudden” decision on granting 50 per cent of education cadres, who will gradually be upgraded to Grade-3, with permanent promotion instead of time scale and selection grade. “We had a meeting with other teachers on Friday and decided to submit a memoranda to the Sub-Committee, Core Committee, Education Minister and Education Secretary, saying our demands have not been fulfilled,” IK Selim Ullah Khondaker, General Secretary of BCS General Education Association told The Independent.
