KHULNA: Workers of nine state-owned jute mills in Khulna region yesterday observed four hours road and railway line blockade in Khulna and Jessore industrial areas to press home their five-point demand, reports BSS. The barricade began at 10.00am and ended at 2.00pm in front of Khalishpur Natun Rasta more, Phulbarigate, Atra and Noapara industrial areas. Agitated workers burnt tyres and put barricade around one kilometer Khulna-Dhaka highway and railway line. They brought out several processions during the blockade. People suffered a lot as vehicular movement came to a halt on Khulna-Dhaka highway due to blockade.
Thousands of workers joined the blockade programme under the banner of CBA and non-CBA Oikya Parisad of state-owned jute mills. Production of all the mills remained stopped during their blockade.
The Oikya Parisad leaders called for observing 18 days agitation programme last month to press home their five-point demands.
The demands include adequate budgetary allocation to the state-run jute mills, implementation of Mandatory Packaging Act-2010 and Jute Goods Act-2002, formation of wage board commission for the government jute mills workers, payment of wages of the jute mill workers and introduction of 20 per cent dearness allowance and permanent jobs for workers of Khalishpur and Daulatpur jute mills.
