Opener Tamim Iqbal made yet another record something what is rare scenario in the international cricket. The swashbuckling opener now sits as the highest run getter for Bangladesh in all three format of the cricket, a feat that no one from the cricketing world could have ever done.
He has been the highest run scorer in Test and ODI format for a quite long time but Shakib Al Hasan was the king in T20 format. Tamim, who has been in purple patch of his career since the 2015, displaced him from the position during his pristine 26 ball-47 runs knock against Ireland, a match that was rained out to force Bangladesh share the points in the qualifier phase of World T20 in Dharmsala on Friday.
Tamim has now 989 runs in T20 format in 48 matches in contrast of Shakib’s 979 in 49 matches. Tamim started the match with 942 runs and the way he was batting, it seemed breaking 1000 runs mark as the first Bangladeshi batsman in this format is a matter of time. He couldn’t do that but against Oman today, he will surely be the favourite to reach 1000 runs milestone as first Bangladesh batsman.
Shakib also could have broken the 1000 runs mark against Ireland but when he entered into the crease, the rain returned to wash out the match finally. Thereby he couldn’t add any runs to his 979. Since Tamim will open the innings, chances are slim for Shakib to reach the milestone first. If Shakib bats, he also could reach 1000 runs along with playing the 50 T20s as the second Bangladeshi player after Mushfiqur Rahim.
Tamim has now 3118 runs in 42 Tests, 4713 runs in 153 ODIs and 989 runs in 48 T20s. What also made him apparent from the contemporary players that he has highest individual score in all three format for Bangladesh. His 206 runs is highest individual score in Test format, his 154 runs is the only 150 plus innings in ODI cricket for Bangladesh and his 88* in T20 format is also the highest personal knock.
The way Tamim has been batting for the last two years, it seemed he would create an eternal legacy to set a benchmark for the future generation.
“He has been playing matured cricket after going through a long lean patch. Now he knows his roles and knows well that his start is catalyst behind Bangladesh’s success in any format of the cricket,” captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza said once.
“He is a huge player for Bangladesh. He is a player who could destroy any bowling line up. In the past he only knows to attack but now he knows when to attack and when to restrain. That was the great evolution of Tamim and for that he is now a better player than the past. And obviously he is the best batsman in the country. When Tamim gives us start, we know our probability of winning the match increases to a great extent,” Mashrafe added.
