World Glaucoma Week concluded yesterday at a local hotel in the capital.
The programmes of the week included rally, free glaucoma screening camps at different public and private hospitals, glaucoma awareness discussion and press conference.
The World Glaucoma Week which was observed around the world and in our country between March 6 to 12 involved ophthalmologists, optometrists, eye care workers, hospitals, universities, clinics, private practices and many private individuals, especially including those with glaucoma or with family members with glaucoma.
The theme of this year’s campaign was ‘Beat Invisible Glaucoma’ and the programme was chaired by chief guest Professor Syed Modasser Ali, former adviser to the Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, Ministry of Health and Family Planning and Social Welfare, special guest Professor Ava Hossain, Vice President Asia Pacific Academy of Opthalmology. Other dignitaries who spoke at the meeting were Prof Deen Mohd Noorul Huq Director General Health Services and Prof Dr A.H.M Enayet Hussain, Secretary General Opthalmology Society of Bangladesh (OSB), Prof. Dr. Naznin Khan, executive member of BGS.
Glaucoma is a condition that causes damage eye's optic nerve and gets worse over time. It's often associated with a buildup of pressure inside the eye. Glaucoma tends to be inherited and may not show up until later in life.
