Speakers at a roundtable discussion yesterday called upon the society to accept the political right, significance and necessity of participation of the disabled women in all the national activities, reports BSS.
Some seven organisations led by disabled women jointly organised the roundtable on the "Political right and participation of disabled women" at Azimur Rahman Conference Hall at Kawran Bazar in the capital on the occasion of the International Women's Day.
Awami League parliamentarian Advocate Abdul Matin Khosru, convener of the Disability Parliamentarian Caucus, attended the roundtable as the chief guest while Tarique-ul-Islam, secretary of the Planning Ministry, Christine Hunter, country director of the UN Women, Kazi Reazul Huq Chowdhury, member of the Human Rights Commission and Ayesha Khanam, president of Mahila Parishad took part as discussants in it as special guests. Mahuya Paul, vice-president of the Access Bangladesh Foundation, chaired the discussion. Participants of the roundtable stressed the need for cooperation of all quarters in the society for participation of the disabled women in the mainstream of the national activities but the government should have to take initiative first in this regard to ensure their participation.
Ashrafun Nahar Mishty, executive director of the Women with Disabilities Development Foundation, moderated the roundtable discussion in which Nasrin Jahan, executive director of the Disabled Child Foundation, gave the introductory speech while Nazma Ara Begum Poppy, general secretary of Bangladesh Visually Impaired Peoples Society and Nasima Akhter, president of the Jatiya Sangsad of Disabled Women, presented papers on the topic.
