Lone ambulance lies inoperative

The lone ambulance at Dumuria Health Complex has been lying inoperative for more than a month for not having driver, causing sufferings to poor patients, particularly during emergencies, reports UNB. Hospital sources said Shamsur Rahman, who had been working as the driver of the ambulance, went on retirement on January 1. Since then, the ambulance remained inoperative. “Over 3.5 lakh people of the upazila, mostly from poor families, totally depend on the health complex. Patients have to suffer when they are referred to Khulna Medical College Hospital in an emergency,” said Habibur Rahman, a resident of the upazila. Visiting the hospital the UNB correspond found Mahfuza, 22, a would-be mother groaning in labour pain in front of the emergency unit of the health complex. Mahfuza’s mother Rahela Begum told the correspondent that it was urgent to take her to Khulna but there was no ambulance at the hospital for doing it. Moreover, there was no arrangement at the hospital to operate upon her and a gynecologist visit patients only once a week, she said. “There is no one to see our sufferings,” she lamented.
Resident Medical Officer of the health complex Yunus Ali said there is only one ambulance for the upazila and patients have been suffering a lot in absence of the lone ambulance.
The Civil Surgeon’s office was informed of the matter but no action has been taken yet to resolve the problem, he said .
Contacted, Civil Surgeon Dr Rafiqul Islam said they are trying to appoint a driver for the ambulance.
