Call to make rainwater harvesting system mandatory

Speakers at a discussion on Saturday evening said, “Rainwater harvesting system should be made mandatory for all government building including schools, colleges, local government institution and other feasible open areas to relieve the acute water shortage in the country, particularly in urban areas.” The discussants said rainwater harvesting technologies should be incorporated in the curriculum of all technical institutes. Research and training institutes should promote technology transfer and build capacity of professionals and practitioners. The systems should be popularised through formal and informal education and awareness creation initiatives, they stressed.
The speakers said standardised design and cost estimates for rainwater harvesting plants need to be made available by relevant agencies. Funding for research on rainwater harvesting should be provided by the government and initiatives should be taken to link research with implementation.
A Khulna based non-government organisation ‘Nabolok’ arranged the discussion in cooperation with ‘WaterAid’ at the conference room of Hotel Royal International in the city with local architects and representatives of real estate companies.
Head of Department of Urban and Regional Planning (URP) of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) Tushar Kanti Roy addressed the discussion as chief guest. Dr Sheikh Serajul Hakim of Architecture Discipline of Khulna University (KU) and Rezbina Khanam of Architect of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) were present as special guests.
The meeting was addressed, among others, architects Khan Zahidul Islam, Fauzia Daizy, Md Shamsuddin, Zahidur Rahman, Sheikh Moshiur Rahman, journalist Gazi Moniruzzaman, Project manager of Nabolok Md Abdullah-Al-Mamun, coordinator Md Nur Mohammad, advocacy officer Syed Amin-Al-Anas, spoke on the occasion.
They also said, “After implementing the rainwater harvesting system, strong monitoring should also be carried out to oversee the implementation process of rainwater harvesting.”
