Lithuanian minister calls on DU VC
Sarunas Birutis, Minister of Culture, Lithuania, called on Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique at his office, on Thursday, reports BSS. The Minister was accompanied by Lithuania Ambassador Laimonas Talat-Kelpsa, Ambassador's spouse Alina Taluntyte, Lithuanian Language Institute Director General Prof Elena Jolanta Zabarskaite and Lithuanian Cultural Ministry high official Ms Gabija Zaukauskiene, a DU press release said.
During the meeting they discussed matters of mutual interest. Lithuanian Minister said an excellent friendly relation has been prevailing between Bangladesh and Lithuania for a long time. Prof Arefin apprised the Lithuanian Minister of Dhaka University’s history, its academic and research activities, its collaboration with various universities of the world, its admission process and its contribution to socio-economic development of Bangladesh.
The possibilities of undertaking joint collaborative academic and research programmes by the University of Dhaka and higher educational institutions in Lithuania were also discussed in the meeting. They stressed the need for exchange of teachers, students, researchers and scientists between DU and Lithuanian universities.
Later, the DU VC took Lithuanian Minister and other members of the delegation to the Central Shahid Minar where they paid homage to Language Martyrs by placing floral wreaths.
BAU distributes seeds, sewing machines
MYMENSINGH: Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) yesterday distributed seeds of high yielding variety rice and sewing machine to the female farmers with a view to develop the socioeconomic status of the rural women.  BAU extension centre (BAUEC) organised the programme at the conference centre of BAU Teacher Student Centre (TSC) around 11am yesterday under the project ‘Production and dissemination of short duration stress tolerant rice varieties to the farmers of Bangladesh’ funded by Ministry of Science and Technology. BAU Vice-chancellor Ali Akbar attended the programme as chief guest with Prof Dr Shahnaz Parvin, director of BAUEC, in the chair.
BAU Students Affairs’ Adviser Prof Jasimuddin Khan and Director General of Bangladesh Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) Dr Shamsar Ali were present as special guest while Andrea B. Bhon, associate director, INGENAES, University of Illinois, attended as honourable guest.
JU first year honours classes begin today
SAVAR: The classes of first year honours course under academic session 2015-2016 of Jahangirnagar University (JU) begins today.
Talking to BSS Deputy Registrar (academic) Mohammad Ali confirmed this. However, the new comers have already got accommodations at their respective dormitories.
Int’l model UN confce held at NSU
The North South University (NSU) on Thursday held an international model United Nations conference in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The NSU Office of External Affairs and NSU Model United Nations Club hosted the event at the syndicate hall of the University. Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, NSU Chairman MA Kashem and Vice Chancellor Prof Atiqul Islam were present.
Throughout the conference, the students participated in intensive discussions and used constructive arguments to tackle the issue related to “The role of youths as change agents for a better world.”
