Rangunia rape case

Victim appeals to withdraw deposition

STAFF REPORTER, Ctg

The victim of Rangunia rape case yesterday submitted an appeal letter to the senior judicial magistrate to withdraw the deposition which she gave under section 22. Rangunia Judicial Magistrate Qudrat-e-Elahi fixed to hear on the appeal today (Monday), concerned lawyers said. The victim said that as the Rangunia police threatened to kill her brother if she did not mentioned that she was raped by her brother instead of Shah Alam. “So I gave the statement before the magistrate in order to save her brother’s life,” said the victim.  She also said the statement was given against her will. Earlier, on June 9, the victim’s mother appeared before the court to withdraw the case.
Nur Jahan Begum, mother of victim, said that on June 9 she did not lodge any case against her son but lodged a case accusing her neighbour Shah Alam for raping her daughter. “But, police changed the case,” she alleged. Ershadur Rahman Rito, lawyer of plaintiff and penal lawyer of Bangladesh Manobadhikar Bastabayan Sanstha told The Independent, “In the application, the victim mentioned that on 10 May this year the deposition which she gave before the
magistrate was under duress as Sub-inspector Mujibur Rahman of Rangunia Police Station suggested her to say that her
brother raped her.”
Ritu also said that realising the fact the victim appeared before the court and applied to withdraw her previous deposition. On May 10, a teenage boy was sent to jail for raping his own younger sister at Shilok Minargazi Tila under Rangunia Police Station.
It was alleged that Rangunia police lodged the case accusing the victim’s brother and also showed her mother as a plaintiff.
