Four people, including a Chinese national, were burnt critically in an explosion at a factory in Jhenaidah Sadar upazila yesterday morning. The people sustained burn injuries in fire triggered by the explosion of a chemical container at the Tazi Agro Industries, a Bangladesh-China joint venture. The injured persons are Frank Savings, a Chinese national, Zalal Hossain, son of Shahjahan Mollah of Achintanagar village, Monir Jan, 30, and Jobayer Hossain, 25, of Dhaka. Manager of Tazi Agro Industries Shahabuddin Ahammed said their factory is situated at Achintanagar village in sadar upazila of Jhenidah. It is a Bangladesh-China joint venture chemical factory, he said adding: “Basically, we make battery ash by burning jute sticks. Our factory is an export-oriented industry.”
Fire fighting units from Jhenidah and neighbouring Magura district brought the blaze under control.
The injured have been admitted in sadar hospital.
The hospital sources said two people, including Frank, have been badly burnt.
They have been referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment, while Frank was flown by a helicopter due to the severity of his condition.
