Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya yesterday said Bangladesh has turned into a role model in disaster management in the world as the country attained the ability to tackle calamities, reports BSS. “We have been able to minimize losses of lives and property caused by natural calamities by undertaking different disaster risk reduction and preparedness activities during the reign of the present government,” he told a function in the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital on the occasion of National Disaster Preparedness Day-2016.
Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Disaster Management and Relief Ministry Dhirendro Debnath Shambhu and Disaster Management and Relief Secretary M Shah Kamal, among others, spoke at the function. Maya suggested the people not to be panicked during disaster period and said the natural calamities should be tackled with courage and patience. In the context he said Bangladesh has achieved the ability to forecast disaster.
He urged all to follow the national building code while constructing buildings. The minister also advised the fishermen to know the weather forecast before sailing for high sea. The theme of the National Disaster Preparedness Day-2016 is: “We will not be afraid of calamities, we will overcome those”. In connection with the observance of the day, the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief and different government and non-government organizations are holding various programmes including rally, discussion and human chains to motivate and sensitize people on disaster management.
