Aiming at expanding country’s economic activities and generating new employments, the government has launched a power sector mega project to provide new electricity connections to some 15 lakh clients under rural electrification scheme, reports BSS.
“The government, in line with the Vision-2021, is determined to bring all the villages in the country under electricity coverage to upgrade the life-standard of rural people,” said Planning Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal.
He said setting up of small and cottage industries would be encouraged in rural areas by ensuring power connection, which would also generate more jobs for the rural people.
Rural Electrification Board (REB) is entrusted to expansion of the rural electrification project through 77 Palli Bidyut Samities across the country by December 2018. The government will provide the entire project cost of Tk 6,915 crore from the national exchequer.
The planning minister informed that the government has given highest priority to expedite the work of providing power connection to all the people of the country by the 2021.
REB recently conducted an in-house feasibility study which shows that some 442,000 kilometer electric lines is needed to ensure cent per cent electricity coverage in the country. But, nearly 12 per cent geographical areas of the country could not be brought under power coverage due to the geographical landscape like islands, forests, hilly areas, water bodies and remote areas. So, the REB considers those 12 per cent areas as off-grid that is why the necessity of electric lines stands at 390,000 kilometer.
