57,000 die a year due to use of tobacco

Speakers at a human chain here said a total of 57,000 people aged over 30 years die and 3,82,000 are affected with various chronicle diseases in our country every year due to use of tobacco, reports BSS.
Tobacco causes oral cancer, esophageal cancer, pancreatic cancer, increased blood pressure and heart rate and negative reproductive outcomes such an increased risk of having a low birth weight infant, they opined.
They made the observations while addressing the human chain organized by Palli Unnayan Prokalpo (PUP) and District Tobacco Control Coalition in front of Asaduzzaman Market on DB Road of the town here on Wednesday afternoon.
Civil surgeon (CS) Dr. Nirmalendu Chowdhury addressed the human chain as the chief guest and senior assistant police super M. Rabiul Islam and residence medical officer of Gaibandha Sadar Hospital Dr. Shahinul Islam Mondal were present as the special guest while community mobilizer of PUP Khairul Hasan Kamol was the moderator.
Nirmalendu Chowdhury in his speeches said smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke cause lung cancer, heart diseases, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, other cancer and reproductive problems.
The other speakers underscored the need for imposing higher tax on tobacco products by the government in a bid to check the trade of tobacco and its use in the country side by side with making the public places free from smoking.
They also demanded of the government for taking necessary steps to use pectoral warning in the packets of all the tobacco products aimed at creating mass awareness against the same to protect the human health from hazardous diseases to build a healthy nation.
